Official trailer released for The Journey film charting early days of McGuinness and Paisley relationship

THE official trailer has been released for the much awaited The Journey, which documents the early days of the relationship between Martin McGuinness and Ian Paisley.

Starring Colm Meaney as McGuinness and Timothy Spall as Ian Paisley, the film is set in 2006, when the party representatives from the two warring factions meet for negotiations after decades-long conflict in Northern Ireland.

The film sees the former Sinn Féin and DUP party leaders, two men from opposite sides of the political spectrum, forced to travel in a car together through the Scottish countryside and, in turn, come together to change the course of history.

According to the filmmakers, "the two men at first seem to have little chance of ever finding common ground.

"But over the course of an impromptu, detour-filled car ride, each begins to see the other less as an enemy, and more as an individual—a breakthrough that promises to at last bring peace to the troubled region.

Directed by Nick Hamm, the film also stars Freddie Highmore, Toby Stephens, John Hurt, Catherine McCormack, and Ian McElhinney.

The Journey opens in the US on June 16, but you can see the trailer below...
