Beaches, cliffs and cottages: 12 stunning photos that prove why Donegal topped the travel Cool List 2017

DONEGAL has beat some stiff competition to come out on top of National Geographic's Cool List for 2017 - and going by these pictures it's easy to see why.

Helsinki, Santiago, Peru, Aarhus, Canada, India, and South Africa - all of them paled in comparison to Ireland's most northernly county in the top places to travel in 2017.

According to National Geographic, "weather-nibbled coast spotted with sea stacks, Blue Flag beaches and offshore islands"means Donegal still feels undiscovered.

While it may have gained publicity for its Star Wars: Episode VIII setting on the Inishowen Peninsula, National Geographic have said the county is set for a tourism boom next year for its landscape, hiking, surfing and cycling along the tip of the Wild Atlantic Way.

The Irish Post asked native Donegallers to name their favourite spots in the county and here's what they said...
