Fr Jim’s diving head first into a good cause

Flying priest Fr Jim Mulligan is more than happy to go the extra mile for a good cause.

Or make that two if you count the 12,000 feet he fell after jumping out of a plane to raise money for St Mary’s Hospital Chapel in London.

The Paddington-based priest took the plunge when he completed his first parachute jump at Maidstone Airfield in Kent.

And now his hair-raising stunt has collected over £5,700 for the refurbishment project at St Mary’s.

Fr Jim, 66 and originally from Co Fermanagh, said: “I was too busy with my harness, goggles and listening to my instructor and cameraman to be frightened. And I’d absolutely do it again.”

St Mary’s chapel was built in 1884 and holds daily Masses, both Anglican and Catholic.

But it is now in much need of repair.

Fr Jim, who has been the Catholic chaplain at St Mary’s for the last three years, said it plays a pivotal role in the hospital.

“As chaplain I see how much use people make of the chapel,” he said. “It’s often the first retreat people head to when they receive bad news, good news or when a relative dies. It will be good to have it looking as presentable as possible.”
