Johnny Depp teams up with Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan

Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has teamed up with The Pogues’ frontman Shane MacGowan to record a version of The Leaving of Liverpool for a new compilation CD.

The song, which dates back to 1885, was reportedly first sung on a ship bound for America.

It has already been recorded by The Pogues, Bob Dylan and The Dubliners.

Depp and MacGowan’s version of the tune will be included in compilation album Son Of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, which will be released on February 19.

A video of the track can be viewed below.

The compilation is a follow up to 2006’s compilation Rogue’s Gallery, which was inspired by Deep’s movie Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Depp has been a friend of MacGowan’s for some time and is a long-time fan of The Pogues. The two previously teamed up to record a version of Screamin Jay Hawkin’s song I Put a Spell on You following the earthquake in Haiti.

Son of Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys will also feature Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Sean Lennon and Frank Zappa, among others.
